AMERICAN BYZANTINE CATHOLIC RESEARCH CENTER (ABCRC)
1334 RAMONA DRIVE, MOUNT SHASTA, CA 96067

It is important for you to understand the founding of the American Byzantine Catholic Research Center and thereby follow the route that the ABCRC will present to assist in solving the "Priest Shortage" and "Church Unity" in the One Church.

The research and writings of ABCRC were initiated in 1985, when Joseph Peter Bonchonsky Sr. (JPB) retired and was determined to reach into history to re-capture the excellent conditions of his particular Apostolic Church, the American Byzantine Rusyn Catholic Church, that served him well in his life. It is recognized that we can not go back in time and live therein but we can study the conditions of those "good years," that is, understand the conditions that presented the wonderful life of our early years, and replicate that foundation by re-capturing the advantages to improve the present-day conditions of a good Christian life.

After retirement, JPB decided to research the history of his particular Apostolic Catholic Church, the Byzantine Rusyn Catholic Church, by spending a complete year in re-reading 27+ books that defined not only his particular Church but also the totality of the One Church founded by Jesus Christ.  The need of a primer to put into writing the lessons learned and lived resulted in the ABCRC publishing of a book, titled, "THE OTHER CATHOLICS, OBEDIENT AND FAITHFUL," (TOCOAF).  The objective of this book, published in 1993, was to have a reference book that would allow easy research access to key information and accomplishments in the One Church. Questions would be answered therein. For example, Where did the 12 First Apostles go and implement the Teachings received directly from Jesus Christ. While we have the Bible to inform us of Our Lord's Teachings to the Twelve Apostles, the results accomplished by the Twelve Apostles, to date, would further inform us of the additional Teachings from Jesus.  The particular Apostolic Churches founded by the Twelve Apostles and the subsequent particular Churches in Apostolic Succession will identify the present-day 24 particular Apostolic  Catholic Churches that constitute the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. In my case, my particular Byzantine (Rusyn) Church was founded in 863 by the Slavic Apostles, Saints Cyril and Methodius, two Greek Orthodox missionaries. Initially, our particular Church was named the Greek Catholic Church. and was in allegiance with St. Peter's particular Apostolic Church in Rome. We reunited in 1646 after an absence caused by lack of communications. Today, we are one of nine particular Byzantine Catholic Churches.

The present-day 25 particular Catholic Churches  are known as the Eastern Catholic Churches  and the Western Catholic Church. The first millennium accomplishments of the early Eastern Catholic Churches (Orthodox) included preparing the Bible, establishing the canon laws of the One Church, conducting the "first ecumenical councils," eight of them, and without the presence of the Pope but the councils did include the Pope's legates. The TOCOAFsummarizes each of the first millennium  ecumenical councils by highlighting basic information to allow an understanding of the major accomplishments through the One Church and her particular Churches in accordance to the teachings of Jesus. The primer, TOCOAF, allows for a foundation in understanding the totality of the One Church and a basic knowledge of three of the particular Churches of the Eastern Churches, an understanding of the Great Schism (1054), the ecumenical councils and their achievements held in the second millennium, the Protestant Reformation, Orthodox Catholic Unity, Married Clergy, the story of three "special" Byzantine priest-heroes, and the organization for Christian Unity in the third millennium.

After printing the primer, it was decided to follow-up by writing ABCRC research articles that would analyze the history of the past, present the status of today, and determine the necessary actions to "grow" our One Church. Naturally, it is impossible to provide information from one research unit that would be unconditionally accepted by the hierarchy, but in the case of ABCRC articles, the basic contents would be that of the bishops' worldwide statistics from their own annual reports to the Rome preparation of Annuario pontificio and available in Our Sunday Visitor Catholic Almanacs. The ABCRC library includes most of the OSV volumes of the last cenrtury. In addition to the Catholic Almanacs, the extensive ABCRC library includes the 1913 Catholic Encyclopedia, over 100 out-of-print books by Eastern Church authors, and volumes of documents, articles, and books of direct interest/impact to the subject of assisting our bishops in solving the unbelievable, extreme "priest shortage."

As a result, the ABCRC articles contained in this website will be well founded in literature, reliable statistics from our Catholic bishops, and, most importantly, being pastored by three Eastern Catholic married priests, and six celibate priests.

The ABCRC has the primary initial objective of assisting our Byzantine bishops to have an oversupply of Catholic priests of the One Church to "go forth and teach all nations" in accordance with the instructions from Our Lord Jersus Christ. With an oversupply of priests and sisters to teach every human being on earth, wars will be avoided, poverty eliminated, illness better combatted, etc. and this a preventive medicine approach to life will avoid the present day surgery that exists throughout the world. GOD IS WITH US and surely Our Lord calls an oversupply of vocations. Now, we must choose those called.
